Meet our returning Artist of the Week – Tia Allen, viola player extraordinaire and brilliant founder of Diverse Concert Artists. Tia will perform at our February 23rd concert @ Interface
We loved sitting down with Tia to learn about her musical journey and how she continues to to play such an impactful role in bridging the gap between many musical genres.
MusicTalks: What drew you to the viola? Was it your first instrument? Do you come from a musical family?
Tia: I chose the viola after local musicians demonstrated string instruments at my elementary school in the fourth grade. I thought the cello and bass were far to large to carry around everyday. I didn’t want to join the majority by choosing the vioiln so I chose the viola. Given my tall stature and long arms I learned very quick that I was built to play this “big violin.” I later gained a passion for the deep warm tones and various colors I could produce while playing the viola.
I grew up in a military family as both of my parents are air force veterans. Music was a love in my household as my dad was a part-time DJ for many years and vinyl records were always spinning on loud speakers at home. We even had an old guitar and mini Yamaha keyboard laying around the house. I, however, am the only one in my family to perform a musical instrument at a master level and pursue a career in music.
MT: How did Diverse Concert Artists come about?
Tia: I founded Diverse Concert Artists in early 2016. There is more visual access to classical and crossover music than ever before in our history given all of the social media platforms. I wanted to answer the questions of where the diversity could be found in these specific genres of music while affording opportunities for colleagues and myself. I created Diverse Concert Artists with a commitment to diversity in classical and crossover music. While the core of the musicians on the roster is African-American, we perform with every culture and ethnicity. Diversity also spreads across our programming including works by Mozart, Grant-Still, Lady Gaga, and even Jay-Z.
MT: Who is a musician/artist who inspires you?
Tia: I don’t know how to simply choose one person. I have been lucky enough in my career to have performed under the baton of Lorin Maazel, as well as with musicians whom are in some of the leading major symphonies in the world, and even graced the stage with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett. I am inspired every time I am in a rehearsal and/or performance. Every musician I have worked with has taught me love and respect for my skill and art. I wake up happy every day knowing that I will continue to be inspired.
MT: What are some of your hidden talents?
Tia: I have a passion for style and fashion. While in school, I supported myself with a part-time career as a stylist. I have a YouTube channel dedicated to all of my passions outside of music including trends in fashion, hair, and vegan food.
